Who’s around our campfire? Each week we will profile a different TEDActive 2013 attendee and give you a peek into what they have to share around the fire in Palm Springs. This week, meet Tereza!
Where are you from?
Pound Ridge, NY. My parents immigrated from Czechoslovakia and most of my relatives are back in Europe.
Where is your favorite place on earth?
What interests you?
I love stories where someone creates something out of nothing. I never seem to tire of them. To me, this is the most fundamental mark of being human.
What problem are you trying to solve?
In the manufacturing era, innovation was treated as a special case, outside the edges. In the social era, it is the emergent norm, something that needs to happen everyday. The tectonic plates are delivering us into a ‘continuous deployment’ world. This suggests people will need to get ever better at innovating, and will need to do it over the entirety of their lifespan. And yet our vision of how innovation gets done is stuck in a 50-year-old framework of young men in garages. I am obsessed with finding new models of innovation which are lifespan sustainable, and inclusive and accessible to all walks of life.
What’s your favorite thing about TEDActive?
The community. I go to a wide array of conferences and this is a very different crowd. Smart AND nice, approachable. High energy.
What’s your favorite TED Talk?
Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi: Flow, the secret to happiness. He reminds me of my dad.
What piece of advice would you give to someone coming to TEDActive for the first time?
Register early to gain access to the Facebook group and the books, and start meeting people virtually in the preceding months. Plan to stay on-site, and get a roommate. You’ll show up with a ready-made posse.
What’s one thing you can’t live without?
My iPhone, obvs.
